What I found with my daughter is that it was hard for her to take instruction from me. When I corrected her it bruised her ego. So what I found that worked better for her when she was 10 was to allow her learn from someone else who she did not have an emotional attachment too. As young girl she was more easily frustrated when things did not work out the way she wanted them too. All she really wanted to do was to make be proud and have me see her in a good light. As a teenager she is more confident in her abilities now.

Anyhow, I am sure in the end you will find a way to work through her frustration so that she can learn the art of crafting.

Yeah, I tried x-stitch with my daughter and she couldn't handle it ... "Too boring."

I can't remember when the x-stitch bug bit me, but I don't think it was when I was younger. I remember my mom teaching me basic embroidery on towels and hankerchiefs and crazy quilts (now those are FUN!), but I didn't pick up x-stitch until I was in my 20s.

I have the same problem if I try to teach my daughter anything! I wound up purchasing a very basic beginners kit with instructions created for kids. She then basically taught herself. I showed her how to tie knots, but that was about it.

hmm well perhaps it will help her gain patience. if not tell her you wont teach her anymore unless she finsihes it, whether or not she likes it, and perhaps something easier, with early gratification, like perhaps knitting a scarf? or sewing an apron? =)

Good luck! Cross stitching is so tedious! Maybe you should let her get some crewel kit to start with that uses yarn. Since it's thicker, things go quicker and it's much more fun! I'm betting your 10-yr. old won't be finishing any cross stitching project anytime soon, unless perhaps, if you let her read this comment, it might motivate her just to prove me wrong. You could try it!
