This story will break your heart
Dec 10th, 2008 by Kim
A little over a year ago my mother-in-law passed away due to stomach cancer. Every once in a while my youngest son will mention her and how he misses her and wishes she was still with us. As the Christmas season fast approaches, he seems to be mentioning her more than usual. This morning he had a conversation with his sister that brought tears to my eyes and a tug at my heart and just thought I would share it all with you.
While the kids were on the Internet this morning they were on a site where you could plug in someone’s name and see if they had been naughty or nice this year. After they had plugged in the entire family’s name (and yes, we’ve all been nice) they then decided to plug in our old cat Oscar’s name. When the site told them that he had been nice, my youngest son then exclaimed that he must still be alive to be on the nice list (he ran away a year ago and they thought he was dead).
Now for the heartbreak….
My son asked my daughter to type in Grammie’s name and see if she made the list. If her name is on the list then she must still be alive!! Well my husband stopped them before they could type in her name as we knew the explanation that we had to give him would break his little heart yet again.
I feel so bad for him and I really wish for his sake that his Grammie wasn’t gone. But since she is, I guess we will just have to have little conversations with him like this until he can finally understand the finality of death.
It’s so sweet that he’s thinking of her so much, maybe you can talk to him and find out why he’s thinking of her so much. Maybe he just wants to know more about her?
Hi Kim.
Why not explain him the truth?
If he´s old enough and you think he´s prepared…
Cheers.
Aw Kim. That must be so hard. You probably miss her so much too. Hugs.
dropping ECard here..hope to see u at mine,, take care!
we have the same dilemma with my daughter. It’s hard to explain why our cat had to die or died. She misses her a lot and kept longing for her. I think death like most things in life are just hard to explain to young mind. Visiting here via EC drop
